The United States: The number of alcoholics has reached a historic high

2019-09-20

The latest study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington shows that the increasing number of female drinkers is driving the proportion of heavy drinking and binge drinking in the United States to historical highs. In contrast, there was no significant change in the proportion of people drinking alcohol.
This study is based on a survey of alcohol consumption in various counties in the United States from 2002 to 2012, which is also the first county-level survey of alcohol consumption in the United States. The results indicate that the proportion of heavy drinkers in the United States has increased by 17.2% since 2005, according to the source of the article, Huaxia Wine News. In 2012, the proportion of heavy drinkers in the United States was about 8.2%, and the proportion of binge drinkers was about 18.3%.
Heavy drinking is defined as an average of one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men in the past month. The definition of binge drinking is at least once in the past month in a specific occasion, with women drinking more than 4 glasses and men drinking more than 5 glasses.
From a national perspective in the United States, the proportion of women who engage in binge drinking has grown faster than men, increasing by 17.5% from 2005 to 2012, while the proportion of men who engage in binge drinking has only increased by 4.9% during the same period.
Dr. Ali Mokdad, the leader of this study, said, "We are surprised by this trend in alcohol consumption, especially among female consumers. We cannot ignore the fact that in many counties in the United States, one fourth or higher of consumers are binge drinkers."
